Judy Wicks is owner and founder of Philadelphia's 25-year-old White Dog Cafe, and is a national leader in the local, living economies movement. She is co-founder of the nationwide Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (BALLE), and founder of the Sustainable Business Network of Greater Philadelphia (SBN). She is also president of White Dog Community Enterprises, a non-profit 501c3 dedicated to building a local living economy in the Philadelphia region.

Judy has won numerous awards, including the James Beard Foundation's Humanitarian of the Year in 2005, and the Philadelphia Sustainability Awards Life Time Achievement in 2007. Other accolades include Oprah Magazine's "5 Amazingly Gifted and Giving Food Professionals," and Inc. Magazine's 25 favorite entrepreneurs. Judy co-authored The White Dog Cafe Cookbook: Multicultural Recipes and Tales of Adventure from Philadelphia's Revolutionary Restaurant, and is currently working on a book about her business and the local living economy movement to be published by Chelsea Green. This workshop explores our relationship with the Earth through Hatha Yoga. Awareness of breath, bones, gravity and alignment will help ground and warm-up participants for the day. Comfortable clothes and a towel recommended.

Exploring Connections with the Land - Adam Davis - An interactive and experiential exploration of our sensual, philosophical, and spiritual relationships with our environment. Participants will work with new techniques for exploring and reflecting upon their relationships to nature.

Adam Davis explores connectivity between aspects of nature with empirical, artistic, and contemplative techniques and perspectives. He learns in order to better serve the community in his role as Assistant Professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences and as an advocate of respect for the beings and processes of nature.
 
Chinese Medicine and Aging Well - Sarah J. Fredrickson, L.Ac.- This lecture will take a different approach to aging using the time-honored theory of Chinese Medicine to explain why we age, and why we shouldn't be afraid. She will discuss common age-related disorders and what acupuncture and Chinese medicine can do to help. "The Body as Teacher" - Shodo Spring - a movement awareness workshop.The Body as Teacher: an exploration of how mindful awareness of the body can inform, enliven, heal, and open up our lives. We'll do movement and awareness exercises with a gentle and nourishing quality.

Shodo Spring, LCSW, has professional training in Hakomi Body-oriented Psychotherapy, Process Work, and other mindfulness-based approaches. In her private practice she offers workshops, groups, and individual consultations. Shodo is also an ordained Zen priest in training at Sanshin Zen Community.

Food Security for the 21st Century - Dr. Michael Simmons - As nonrenewable energy resources dwindle, global climate warms, and global population increases, we face a century in which the food security of billions will be at risk. The workshop will focus on how we can prepare at the local level for challenges to our food security. Discussion will include how to mitigate damages to the local food supply, how to adapt to changes in the global food supply, and how to assure that social justice and environmental stewardship will not become victims of the coming food crisis.

For the past ten years she has joyfully brought developmentally disabled, youth, seniors, students and many others to the gardens and greenhouses of Hilltop Garden and Nature Center and to her farm, Healing Harvest Farm to reap the healing benefits of working with plants.

Urban Agriculture: A Victory for Good Health

By returning to Victory Gardens and with human creativity, urban agriculture is experiencing a global resurgence. Workshop will include: an overview of simple organic methods, new ideas such as vertical farming, fine art using plants as media, hindrances of municipal codes, and urban farming businesses.

Dark Side Tribal Belly Dance - American Tribal Style and Tribal Fusion Belly Dance will perform a special choreographed veil dance and an American Tribal Style improvised piece to create a joyful sound for this important annual festival on sustainable living.

Storyteller, Paul Swanson
Though he's loved stories all his life, Paul recently joined the Bloomington Storytellers' Guild four years ago and performs regularly at
the Festival of Ghost Stories and Wintertelling events. He also brings his stories into the classroom as a teacher at Harmony School, where he teaches English, Cultural Arts, Critical Thinking, History, and Music. He is currently being trained by both his dog and his cat to be more attentive to their needs, and is pondering the best place in town to bury
his savings.
 
 
Storyteller, Patricia C. Coleman RMT is a Poet, Storyteller and Visual Artist. She has been involved with the Bloomington Storyteller's Guild for more than a decade. She has presented in the Indianapolis Children's Museum, on University Campus's, coffeehouses and other places. She is a member of 5 Women Poets Writing Workshop and Host of the Runcible Spoon Poetry Series and Open-mic.

 

Francis Miller and Pritam Hari - Frances and Pritam are an enlivening and unique acoustic duo involving violin, guitar, voice and the enchanting hang drum. Their improvisational instrumental style weaves its way around simple and soulful songs about life's unfolding and the mystery of growth. Frances Miller is a multi-instrumental performer, facilitator, teacher and performer with a passion for creative expression as a tool of transformation. Pritam is a guitarist with an extensive musical background. He is deeply involved with devotional music as a Kirtan musician.
