Specific locations at which treatment by acupuncture is delivered. Absolute
The pure essential oil, extracted from a concrete using alocohol. Acupressure
Acupressure is an energy-based technique based on acupuncture that uses
the fingers and hands to apply gentle pressure to specific points along the body.
The stimulation releases endorphins, which are the bodies pain relieving chemicals.
Acupressure releases muscle tension, allowing the blood and energy to flow freely
making it easier for toxins to be released and eliminated. This technique is used
to treat a variety of ailments, including stress related problems, aches, pains,
cramps and arthritis. Acupuncture
Acupuncture is the insertion at specific points of fine needles in varying lengths
to stimulate, disperse and regulate the body's vital energy flow, known as 'qi'
or 'life force', allowing the body to heal itself through the restoration of a
healthy energy balance. In the West, acupuncture is used to treat a wide range
of conditions and to provide pain relief. Adjustment
This term applies to a small controlled thrust by a chiropractor, that moves a
joint slightly beyond its normal range of motion to reestablish proper alignment.
Adulterated Diluted
or altered in some way from a natural state. Alexander
Technique F. Matthias Alexander created this method after concluding
that bad posture was responsible for his own chronic voice loss. The Alexander
Technique is a method used in the alleviation of chronic back pain. Through the
use of gentle hands-on guidance and verbal instruction, Practitioners teach simple
efficient ways of moving as a means of improving balance, posture, coordination
and to relieve tension and pain. It can be useful in healing repetitive strain
injuries, postural pain in pregnancy and gastro-intestinal disorders. It is believed
that poor posture can also affect our mental state; and that with instruction,
it is possible to relieve problems, such as stress and anxiety. Allopathy
is the treatment of disease by creating conditions that are opposite or hostile
to the conditions resulting from the disease itself. Drugs and surgery are allopathic
treatments. The term is sometimes used in referenceto conventional Western medicine
to clarify its contrast to alternative therapies, particularly homeopathy, which
is based on the principle of like curing like. AMMA
Therapy (or ANMA) AMMA therapy is a system of bodywork therapy that uses
traditional oriental medical principles for assessing, evaluating and restoring
the flow of life energy in the body in combination with a Western approach to
organ dysfunction. This therapy aims to restore, promote and maintain optimum
health through the treatment of the physical body, bio-energy and emotions. It
may include dietary plans, detoxification, herbs and vitamins, and therapeutic
exercises, and it is used to treat a wide range of conditions. Applied
Kinesiology is a a diagnostic technique and therapy developed in the
1960s by a George Goodheart, a chiropractor. Applied kinesiology believes that
organ or gland dysfunctions show up as weaknesses in certain muscles. Using gentle
pressure, applied kinesiologists test muscle strength to identify health problems
and nutritional deficiencies and aim to restore balance by massaging acupressure
points to improve circulation flow. Treatment may involve hands-on manipulation
of the muscles, exercises to strengthen a muscle, and bones, and vitamin or mineral
supplements. Kinesiology is much used by practitioners of osteopathy, chiropractic,
homeopathy and nutritional therapies. Practitioners use Kinesiology to alleviate
problems with the immune system, neck and back pain; it is also said to be useful
in detecting vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Aromatherapy
uses essential oils from flowers, trees, roots, herbs, berries and fruits,
to treat emotional disorders such as stress and anxiety as well as a wide range
of other ailments and to promote physical, mental and emotional wellness making
use of their extraordinary medicinal and therapeutic powers. The oils are either
massaged into the skin in a diluted form, inhaled, placed in baths, or applied
on and around the body. Aromatherapy is often used in conjunction with many wholistic
healing practices such as massage therapy, acupuncture, reflexology, herbology,
chiropractic. Ayurvedic medicine
A form of medicine practiced in India. Health is considered to be a state
of balance between the body's physical, emotional, and spiritual systems, and
illness is a state of imbalance. Illness may be detected by reading of the pulse
and by observation of the tongue. Nutrition, massage, natural medications, meditation,
and other modalities may be used for treatment of a wide variety of ailments. Art
Therapy Is the use of art images as a vehicle to understanding who we
are and to help in the expression of feelings and ideas that may not be easily
Viewed as a cathartic and non-threatening way of venting repressed feelings, art
therapy can help people gain confidence and bolster self-esteem. Art therapy has
been shown to be highly beneficial for people battling with eating disorders,
addictions and stress. It has also been known to help those coming to terms with
bereavement, and those suffering from Alzheimer's and other terminal illnesses. Aston-Patterning
Aston-Patterning aims to increase the body's grace, resiliency and ease of movement
by releasing layers of tension throughout the body. It uses movement education,
bodywork, environmental design and fitness training. Astrology
Astrology is "the original art-science of human potential" with roots
to 30,000 BCE, currently practiced in numerous branches or specialties. 'Horoscopic'
& 'Synastric' astrology illustrate the Design of Life for each individual,
partnership, or corporate, political, & other entity, having a place &
beginning in Time. Astrologers (using charts, dials &/or graphs of Cosmic
Dimensions) counsel on the most satisfying & productive life, attitudes &
actions, forecasting development & probable outcome using Planetary Movement
& Alignment. 'Electional' Astrology selects the best beginnings for desired
outcomes. 'GeoPolitical' Astrology analyzes local & world conditions and forecasts
socio-political developments. 'Horary' Astrology divines answers to questions.
Professional Astrologers are often knowledgeable of, or trained in, other disciplines,
therapies, or healing arts, including those in this Glossary-Resource. Aura-Soma
At the core of Aura-Soma are the Equilibrium Bottles - living jewels of liquid
colour. In the upper fraction is a combination of Essential Oils and Crystal energies
in a carrier oil with a touch of Lotus Oil; and in the base fraction a combination
of the Herbal Watery part of the plant and Crystal energies in spring water together
with Chalice Well Water. Ayurvedic
Medicine has been practiced in India for over 5,000 years. Ayurvedic tradition
holds that illness is a state of imbalance among the body's systems and can be
detected through such diagnostic procedures as reading the pulse and observing
the tongue. Nutritional counseling, massage, natural medications, meditation and
other modalities are used to address a spectrum of ailments, from allergies to
AIDS. Return
To Top Bach Flower
Essences The Bach Flower Remedies were originally designed for self-help,
but they are now an integral part of homeopathic, naturopathic and herbal medicine
treatements. Applied Kinesiologists will also at times recommend them. It is believed
that by drinking the diluted concentrated flower essence, health and harmony can
be maintained during times of emotional crisis or stress. BEHAVIOR
THERAPY/MODIFICATION aims at modifying behavior by reinforcing acceptable
behavior and suppressing undesirable behavior. The therapist employs any of various
techniques of reward and punishment including aversion therapy, desensitization,
or guided imagery. The learning theory of the psychologist B.F. Skinner and others
is the basis for most behavior therapies. In Skinner's principle of extinction,
a behavior pattern that is not reinforced, or rewarded, will be extinguished or
rendered inoperative. For example, if smoking is made unpleasant for the smoker,
then the smoking habit may be curbed or given up. Behavior therapy is used in
private and institutional therapy, in group and individual settings, to treat
such disorders as drug addiction, alcoholism, and phobias.
Berrywork This bodywork
was created by the late Lauren Berry, PT. He was a contemporary of Trager, Feldenkrais
and Rolf who devised a system of "correctives" that involve stretches
and that work the fascia, cartilage and joints. His work is passed on through
the teaching of his advanced students. Bio
Energy Healing or Bioenergetics Bio Energy will treat most things, on
a physical, emotional, and spiritual level, be it illness, injury or stress. Bio
Energy therapists are trained to detect blockages in the energy field that may
have been caused by repressed emotions and desires that affect the body and psyche
chreting chronic muscular tension with diminished vitality and energy. Through
physical exercises, breathing techniques, verbal psychotherapy, or other forms
of emotional-release work, the therapist attempts to loosen this bagage and restore
natural well-being and create a body where natural healing can take place. Biofeedback
Therapy uses machines to measure and display body functions and states
such as heart rate, skin temperature, muscle tention, and brain activity. sees
how and why they change through stages of rest and activity. Over time patients
learn to control these functions. This technique is used especially for stress-related
conditions such as asthma, migraines, insomnia and high blood pressure. Bergaptene
A phototoxic chemical that is sometimes removed from essential oils, most
commonly bergamot.
Biofield
an energy field that suffuses living bodies and extends several inches beyond
the body. This concept is employed in therapies such as healing touch, medical
qigong, therapeutic touch, and reiki. In these therapies, the biofield from a
practitioners hands is joined to the recipients biofield in order to treat an
illness or to promote health. There is no consensus on what biofield is; some
say it is spiritual energy, others say it is an electromagnetic field.
BioSync® Method
The BioSync Method is a unique deep tissue/neuromuscular therapy that facilitates
the body's own healing process. Its three-step process releases soft tissue at
the deepest level, permanently erasing and unlocking trauma patterns. This allows
the body to continually unfold toward its full potential. Unique body positions
and biomechanically correct equipment are used. The positions and equipment allow
for greater access into the body, which cannot be accessed on a traditional massage
table. Body Harmony®
Body Harmony® is the name given to an integrated approach to bodywork and
life skills pioneered by Don McFarland and now practised around the world. Body
Harmony incorporates many of the numerous techniques available for working with
the body, mind and spirit but what makes it particularly effective is the way
the incorporates these into a touch that listens to the whole being. Body-Mind
Centering a movement-reeducation approach that explores how the body's
systems contribute to movement and self-awareness. The approach also emphasizes
movement patterns that develop during infancy and childhood. Incorporates guided
movement, exercise, imagery and hands-on work. Body-Oriented
Psychotherapy seeks to enhance the psychotherapeutic process by incorporating
a range of massage, bodywork and movement techniques. Acknowledging the mind-body
link, practitioners may use light touch, soft or deep-tissue manipulation, breathing
techniques, movement, exercise or body awareness techniques to help address emotional
issues. Botanical Name
The latin name given to a species of plant to clearly distinguish it from
other plants that share the same common name. Bottom
note Same as Bass note. The foundation or the least volatile notes of
a fragrance. Usually these are woody, resinous notes.
Bowen
Technique Pioneered by Tom Bowen in '50's Australia, this non-manipulative
technique was later developed by an osteopath who trained practitioners around
the world. Said to stimulate energy flow, this hands-on method maximises the body's
ability to heal itself. The Bowen technique is beneficial to virtually any condition,
but it is particularly effective with back and joint pain, and sports injuries.
It is also said to relieve bronchitis and menstrual problems. Breathwork
general term for a variety of techniques that use patterned breathing to promote
physical, mental and/or spiritual well-being. Some techniques use the breath in
a calm, peaceful way to induce relaxation or manage pain, while others use stronger
breathing to stimulate emotions and emotional release.
Breema Breema takes
its name from the Kurdish mountain village of Breemava where it originated and
was passed down from generation to generation. It is a comprehensive system of
bodywork, done on the floor, with a variety of techniques ranging from simple
holding points on the body to techniques requiring flexibility and dexterity.
Return To Top Carrier
Oil An oil that is used to dilute and distribute essential
oils over the skin. Castille
A soap made from 100% olive oil. Castille soaps nowadays may not be made
of pure olive oil but are still mostly comprised of olive oil.
Cetyl
alcohol A fatty alcohol which keeps oil and water from separating and
can help boost foam.
CO2
extracts Oils extracted by the CO2 (carbon dioxide) method are commonly
called "CO2s". CO2s are extracted by pressurizing carbon dioxide until
it becomes a liquid. The liquid carbon dioxide then acts as a solvent on the natural
plant matter and the essential oil content then dissolves into the liquid CO2.
Once the CO2 is brought back to natural pressurization, the CO2 evaporates back
into its gaseous state and what is left is the resulting oil. The advantage of
CO2 extracted oils is that there is no heat damage to the constitutents of the
oil. Cold Pressed Oils
processed under 280 degrees are considered to be cold pressed.
Cold
Process In this soap making process oils are warmed , a lye mixture added
then stirred to trace. This process produces its own natural heat for the formation
of soap. There are no waste products produced in this process. Colloidal
Colloidal particles are small enough that they remain suspended in liquid
or gas but do not dissolve. Conventional
The term conventional is used to refer to botanicals grown using current
"conventional" means as opposed to "organically grown". Some
pesticides and chemical fertilizers may be used in their culture. Chair
Massage (or on-site or seated massage) This refers to a brief bodywork
session, usually a shiatsu-based routine, done in a special chair in which the
client sits facing toward the cushions, exposing the scalp, shoulders, neck, back
and hips. Sessions may last between five and thirty minutes. Originally pioneered
as "on-site massage", a modality for the workplace, it has expanded
into many other environments. Chakras
the seven vital energy centers of the body. The chakras extend from the base of
spine to the crown of head. Located in the rectal area, near the genitals, behind
the navel, at the heart, at the neck, between the eyebrows, and on the crown of
the head. Each chakra corresponds to certain colors, emotions, organs, nerve networks,
and energies. Chi
In traditional Chinese medicine, it is the vital force or energy of the body.
Disease is an imbalance in this flow of energy in and around the body. Also seen
spelled as Qi. Chi
Gong (also Qigong) Qi gong incorporates movement, breathing and meditation
to improve the flow of qi (life energy) around the body, said to increase vitality
and promote the body's own healing mechanisms. The ancient Chinese are said to
have studied the natural movement of animals, after which many qi gong poses take
their names. Chi Kung
A gentle, deep form of body energy treatment given from a trained practitioner
that utilizes techniques based on Chi Kung (QiGong) philosophy. The treatment
will enhance and balance the flow, volume and quality of Chi energy within the
energy body. This is done through objective assessment and diagnosis of the energy
body and application of directed energy through intent and non-judgmental compassion. Childbirth
Educator Childbirth Educators provide education individually or in a class
setting for expectant parents, teaching such things as mindful preparation and
awareness, relaxation, massage, positions and advocacy. Chinese
Herbal Medicine A branch of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chinese herbal
medicine is an ancient diagnostic technique which takes a holistic view of a client's
symptoms, instead of looking for a specific disease. Chinese herbalism uses herbs
for both treatment and prevention of a wide range of physical, mental and emotional
conditions. Practitioners often use herbs in conjunction with acupuncture, which
complement each other. Chiropractic
is based on the premise that the spine is literally the backbone of human
health. Misalignments of the vertebrae caused by poor posture or trauma result
in pressure on the spinal nerve roots, which may lead to diminished function and
illness. Chiropractic assist with conditions associated with the skeletal structure
of the back. It is said to be particularly beneficial to those suffering from
sciatica, lower back pain, slipped discs, and even constipation, asthma, migraines
and tinnitus. Colonic Hydrotherapy
involves the cleansing of the large intestine with warm purified water. It is
a safe, effective method of removing waste from the large intestine, without the
use of drugs. A single colonic treatment is said to be equivalent to several enemas
in removing toxic debris from the colon. Color
Therapy Colours are known to vibrate at different wavelengths and at differing
frequencies. Practitioners of colour therapy use this knowledge to correct imbalances
in the body which, itself, vibrates at a cellular level. Certain parts of the
body are governed by chakras (vortexes of life energy) which are associated with
individual colours, ranging from fuschia at the crown of the head, to green at
the heart, and blue at the throat, all of which can be used to treat behavioural
problems. Core Belief Engineering
Elly Roselle has created a method of psychotherapy which allows conscious access
to subconscious areas of the mind. In a process guided by a trained practitioner,
clients are able to re-engineer old outdated beliefs and decisions and replace
them with more open and inclusive expressions of self. Clients are seen in private
sessions of 5 or more hours. CORE
Counseling We are here to learn two things: to consciously create our
own success and to develop a lifestyle that brings us joy. The CORE concept
(Conscious, Ownership, Retrieve, Release, Engage) helps us to reach those goals
by acting with conscious dominion over our own lives. Cranial
Osteopathy It is believed that the cerebrospinal fluid, which protects
and nourishes the membranes encasing the brain, spinal cord and sacrum pulse at
a certain speed. A skilled practitioner will be able to detect disturbances in
the flow which can lead to tension in the body. Using gentle manipulation of the
cranial and spinal bones, the treatment boosts the cranial rhythmic impulse (CRI)
boosting blood and other circulatory systems. Craniosacral
Therapy is a a manual procedure for correcting distortions in the structure
and function of the craniosacral mechanism - the brain and spinal cord, the bones
of the skull, the sacrum, and interconnected membranes. This technique t is used
to treat chronic pain, migraine headaches, TMJ, and a range of other conditions.
The action of the cranio-sacral system imparts a subtle but palpable rhythmic
motion to the entire body structure. Crystal
Healing Crystals and gems have long been valued for more than their aesthetic
beauty. Many cultures have imbued them with mystical qualities and it has long
been believed that they both store and conduct healing energies. Different crystals
and stones are said to resonate at different vibrational frequencies, offering
varying healing possibilities. Return
To Top Dance Therapy
Using dance therapy, people are encouraged to express themselves confidently in
a non-verbal way, responding naturally and spontaneously to rhythm. This helps
them connect with their subconscious to establish stronger personal identities
in an atmosphere of mutual trust. Dance therapy is often used in conjunction with
physiotherapy or occupational therapy, and has been proved highly effective and
popular in schools, prisons and institutions. Dar'
Shem Dar'Shem, which has been called the Reiki of Sophia, is a powerful
Wisdom-centered spiritual technology, with 12 symbols that act very specifically
and powerfully. Much of the energy is Feminine in nature although it is used by
those with bodies of both genders. But Dar' Shem isn't just another Reiki form.
It is only taught to Reiki masters because it is so powerful. Because of the growing
spirituality available in the West, it is possible to offer more powerful initiations
in which many more secrets can be given. It is a true initiatic tradition, involving
powerful mental, physical, spiritual and emotional transformation, enabling the
initiated to awaken! and arise! For more information, see see http://www.darshem.org/sys-tmpl/door/ Deep
Tissue Bodywork general term for a range of therapies that seek to improve
the function of the body's connective tissues and/or muscles. Among the conditions
treated are whiplash, low back and neck pain, and degenerative diseases, such
as multiple sclerosis. Dentistry,
Wholistic wholistic dentists are licensed dentists who bring an interdisciplinary
approach to their practice, often incorporating such methods as homeopathy, nutrition
and acupuncture into their treatment plans. Most wholistic dentists emphasize
wellness and preventive care and avoid silver-mercury fillings.
Diathermy deep-heat therapy that
uses high-frequency electric currents to produce heat in body tissues. Physical
therapists and sports physicians use diathermy to treat arthritis, bursitis, and
fractures. It also may help treat gynecological diseases and sinusitis.
Dietary
Supplement a product intended to supply nutrients and other healthful
substances that may be lacking in a diet. Term used to apply only to vitamins,
minerals, and proteins. Herbs are now classified as dietary supplements, and the
definition also includes amino acids, glandulars (processed animal glands), enzymes,
fish oils, and various extracts, such as flower essences. While their labels may
not make any claims to cure, prevent, treat, or mitigate a disease, they can claim
to help a structure or function of the body. Unlike food additives and prescription
and over-the-counter drugs, dietary supplements do not require FDA approval to
be sold on the market. Doula
A doula is a professionally trained labor support provider, offering holistic,
continuous informational, physical, and emotional support to the family giving
birth. She works for the family, not the hospital or care provider. She helps
the mother go through labor and helps the father participate at his own comfort
level. Doula is a Greek word referring to an experienced woman who helps other
women. Dram A unit
of measurement equaling about 1/8 of an ounce or about 4 grams.
Dream
Therapy mental activity associated with the rapid-eye-movement period
of sleep. Generally consists of visual images and may reflect bodily disturbances
or external stimuli. In primitive and ancient cultures, dreams played an extensive
role in myth and religion. Freud emphasized dreams as keys to the makeup of the
individual and distinguished between the experienced content of a dream and the
actual meaning of the dream. Jung held that dreams are not limited to the personal
unconscious but may also be shaped by archetypes that originate in the collective
unconscious of the human species. Ear
Candling Also called Ear Coning. Involves placing the narrow end of a
specially designed hollow candle at the entry of the ear canal, while the opposite
end is lit. Primarily used for relieving wax build up and related hearing problems,
ear candling is also used for ear infections and sinus infections.
Earth Energy
Geopathic stress can be detected through various diagnostic methods including
vega testing, kinesiology, dowsing, live cell analysis and serum analysis. Balancing
energy fields to remove geopathic stress encourages recovery from ill health,
and allows other therapies to act unhindered and therefore more effectively and
efficiently. EFT - Emotional
Freedom Technique EFT or Emotional Freedom Technique is a process that involves
tapping with your fingers on energy meridians of the body whilst tuned into "The
Issue". A 'reminder phrase' is used to focus on "The Issue". EFT
works by balancing the body's energy system, removing any disturbance to the energy
flow. It is widely applicable to both emotional and physical problems. Emollient
Something that has softening or soothing
properties.
Enfleurage
odorless fats and oils are used to to absorb the essential
oil from the plant material
EO
Essential Oil
Essential
fatty acid One of a family of molecules that are essential to the health
of, but not manufactured by, our human body and must be obtained from the diet
or through supplements.
Essential
oil Highly concentrated, volatile, aromatic essences of plants.
Exfoliant
A substance that aids in the removal of dead and surface skin.
Energy
Field Work Practitioners look for weaknesses in the energy field in and
around the clients body and seek to restore its proper circulation and balance.
Energy channeled through the practitioner is directed to strengthen the body's
natural defenses and help the client's physical, mental, emotional and/or spiritual
state. Enzyme Therapy
a form of therapy that employs supplements of plant and animal enzymes to improve
digestive function and other conditions. During digestion, the body's own digestive
enzymes are not the only ones at work; the enzymes present in raw fruits and vegetables
also contribute to the breakdown of food in the stomach. Enzyme therapy advocates
supplementation to reduce the work that the body has to do, and because plant
enzymes are destroyed in cooking. Since enzymes can't be synthetically manufactured,
supplements are derived from plants or from animal tissues. Some practitioners
inject liquid enzymes to treat cancer and multiple sclerosis. Enzyme supplements
are available over the counter, singly or in combination, in capsule, tablet,
powder, and liquid form. Return To
Top Esalen
Esalen is a variant of Swedish massage pioneered at Esalen Institute in Big Sur,
California. Esalen is the place where many therapies were tested or launched in
the 60's and 70's, including gestalt therapy and rolfing. The unique brand of
massage practiced there typically involves total nudity and long flowing stokes.
Esalen is known for its original, honest, nurturing and probing atmosphere. Esalen
massage tends to be nurturing, trance-like and meditative, allowing the greatest
possible unfoldment to take place in the client. Essential
a nutritional term applied to vitamins, minerals, and amino acids; refers to anything
that the body does not manufacture and that must be obtained through the diet. Energy
medicine Therapies which use an energy field (electrical, magnetic, sonic,
acoustic, microwave, infrared) to detect or treat illness. A practitioner would
identify imbalances in the energy fields of the patient's body and then correct
them. Environmental Medicine
An approach to medicine which focuses on the role of dietary and environmental
allergens on health and disease. Skilled use of environmental medicine may help
improve many chronic illnesses. Expressive
Therapies use the arts to promote physical & mental health and personal
growth. Examples of expressive therapies include art therapy, dance therapy, drama
therapy, music therapy, poetry, and psychodrama. Return
To Top Falun Dafa
/ Falun Gong Falun Dafa, also known as Falun Gong, is an ancient practice
for cultivating the body and mind, which was made public in 1992 by Mr. Li Hingzhi.
This practice teaches obtainment of physical and mental well-being through five
gentle and peaceful exercises, suitable for all ages, and adherence to the principles
of Truthfulness, Kindness and Tolerance. Feldenkrais
- reconnect with a natural way to move. There are wo recognised Feldenkrais methods
are used: one involves the patient developing body awareness. Alternatively, touch
and manipulation are used in the 'functional integration' technique. Patients
learn to be constantly aware of their bodies and to reorganise their movements
to prevent unnecessary muscle strain. Feng
Shui The ancient art of feng shui dictates that the geography of one's
home and the harmonious placement of furniture and objects inside positively benefits
all aspects of one's life. Some refer to feng shui as 'space acupuncture', based
as it is on the same principles as traditional Chinese medicine. Fixative
An ingredient that stabilizes volatile oils and prevents them from evaporating
too quickly. Fixed oil
A fixed oil is an oil that is not volatile and will not evaporate if left
exposed. This term is used to differentiate vegetable oils from volatile essential
oils. Flash Point The
temperature at which a substance will combust. In candlemaking, the flashpoint
of waxes and fragrance oils is important.
Flower
Essences/Gem Elixirs These are vibrational remedies, usually taken internally
(or rubbed on the skin, or added to bathwater). They help to re-balance the body's
etheric electrical system when its imbalance is affecting your life. In these
times we are all being required to absolve, release, deal with all of our old
fears which are blocking our spiritual progress. Flower essences (and gem elixirs)
work quickly, gently, and powerfully to help us do this releasing/cleansing of
all of our blockages. Fragrance
Oil (FO) A synthetic fragrance or scent.
Glucosamine
Sulfate a natural amino sugar found in joint spaces.
As a dietary supplement, it is said to stimulate the repair of arthritic joints
by building up the protective cartilage that arthritis destroys. Return

every part of the body, stretching and toning the muscles and joints as well as
the spine and skeletal system. Yogic breathing and meditation helps to revitalize
the body, helps to calm and quiet the mind, increases the ability to relax, and
enables a person to connect with their spirit. Healing
Touch Healing Touch balances and aligns the body's energy system. It increases
relaxation and helps to decrease the stress response, which promotes positive
changes in attitudes, behaviors, thoughts, and emotions. When there is balance
with the body, mind, and spirit, the body will heal itself naturally. Healing
Touch facilitates the healing process by re-aligning the energy flow, thus re-activating
the mind, body, spirit connection to eliminate blockages to self healing. Hellerwork
Hellerwork is a refined and thorough synthesis of myofascial bodywork, movement
education, and mindful dialogue, rebalancing and re-energising the connective
tissue network of the whole body. Hellerwork clients experience markedly improved
posture, movement, use of the body, also reduction or elimination of painful symptoms,
and enhanced mind-body connections, personal development, awareness of self, others,
and our world. Full details can be found at http://www.hellerwork-europe.com.

Practitioners exercise their knowledge of herbal synergy which is based on
using parts of whole plants which contain a complex mix of active ingredients
for medicinal effect. Herbalism is said to be beneficial for most illnesses, respiratory
and circulatory conditions, and others including depression and insomnia. It is
believed that over 80% of the world's population turns to herbal remedies for
health. Herbal Medicine
It involves the use of natural plants or plant-based substances to treat
illness and to enhance the body's function. Medicines are prepared from plant
materials including leaves, stems, roots, and bark. These treatments usually contain
many biologically active ingredients. The herbs can be prepared in many ways and
may be found in many forms including pills, capsules, powders, and extracts. The
strengths of herbal remedies can vary depending on the species of herbs used,
how and when they were gathered, and how they were prepared. Herbal remedies should
be used under the guidance of a practitioner familiar with herbal medicine. Holographic
Repatterning Firmly grounded in the principals of new physics, Holographic
Repatterning is based on the understanding that we are an energetic system with
frequency patterns. In earlier experiences when emotional pain was not resolved,
our life energy constricted. Our frequencies lost their optimal pulsation, or
coherent state, and this manifests outwardly in the problems and concerns in our
daily lives. As we identify the non-coherent frequency patterns we are in phase
with and the coherent frequency patterns we are out of phase with and return them
to their optimal state of coherence, profound changes occur in our lives. HIV
Therapies practitioners offer a range of therapies that aim to treat the
human immuno-deficiency virus, AIDS, or its' symptoms. Due to the life-threatening
nature of this disease, these therapies are often used as complements to conventional
approaches to HIV. Holistic/Wholistic
an adjective meaning targeted to the whole person - mind, body, and spirit. Wholistic
medicine considers not only physical health but also the emotional, spiritual,
social, and mental well-being of the person. Holistic
Medicine Patients are seen as
a whole body rather than as a collection
of symptoms or as a disease. Consideration is given
to the patient's emotional and spiritual state and the impact they can can have
over the patient's condition. The areas of nutrition, environment, and lifestyle
are seen as contributing factors in an illness. Holistic Practitioners may combine
traditional forms of treatment (medication and surgery) with alternative forms
of treatment including homeopathy, , chiropractic, massage, herbal medicine and
acupuncture. Homeopathy
uses infinitesimal doses of natural substances to stimulate a person's immune
and defense system. Homeopathic remedies are named for the plant or animal ingredient
they are made from. Sometimes known as the 'way of similars', the principle of
homeopathy is to give the patient a minute dose of a substance which is known
to induce the condition. Medicines prepared homeopathically stimulate the body's
own healing mechanism. Many homeopaths also believe that an individual's mental,
physical, and emotional constitution may also need to be treated. The potency
is based on the dilution ratio and it is believed that the more diluted the dose,
the more potent the effect. Hydrosol
the water that is obtained along with essential oil after plant materials are
distilled. In distillation, plant materials are heated in water to release plant
oils. The steam and vapor are channeled through a tube to a condensing coil, where
they cool and return to liquid form. The essential oils float on top of the water.
The hydrosol contains water-soluble plant constituents and trace amounts of essential
oil. Hydrosols are sometimes used in aromatherapy together with the essential
oils and may be spritzed in the air and on the face and body. Return
To Top Hypnosis
although the condition resembles normal sleep, scientists have found that the
brain wave patterns of hypnotized subjects are much closer to the patterns of
deep relaxation. Hypnosis is now generally viewed as a form of attentive, receptive,
highly focused concentration in which external events are omitted or disregarded.
Widely used by surgeons, dentists, and psychotherapists to relieve anxiety or
as an anesthetic. Used to relax a patient, reduce resistance to therapy, facilitate
memory, to address stopping smoking, eating less, or fighting fears. Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy is a good example of how the mind can influence the body to enable
people to overcome phobias, inhibitions, pain and dependencies. When under hypnosis,
the conscious mind takes a back seat, allowing the subconscious to be accessed.
Hypnotherapy is highly beneficial to most people, but it should be avoided if
you suffer severe depression, psychosis or epilepsy. Indian
Head Massage Practitioners concentrate on massaging
the head and shoulders with a variety of strokes, and working a warm oil (coconut
is used in the Indian subcontinent) into the hair. This is said to relax the thin
layer of muscle covering the head, improving blood flow. Return
To Top Intuition
Medicine® Intuition Medicine® is a branch of energy medicine.
Combining a study of vital energy, the most basic substance of all matter, and
energy anatomy systems this practice can be thought of as the foundation for all
other healing modalities. Intuition Medicine® offers a healing modality that
can be both an alternative and a complement to our traditional methods of healing.
The ultimate goal of Intuition Medicine® is to help people live within their
highest level of integrity and grace. Iridology
Iridology is often used by homeopaths, naturopaths, nutritional therapists
and herbalists as a diagnostic tool. Based on the premise that every organ has
a corresponding location within the iris of the eye, which can serve as an indicator
of the organ's health or disease. The right iris corresponds to the right side
of the body and the left to the left. The iris is then divided into a serious
of concentric zones surrounding the pupil and then radialy like segments of a
clock. The iridologist interprets iris signs by noting pigmentation change and
pattern change. Jin Shin Do
Jin Shin Do is a synthesis of acupressure theory, psychology, taoist philosophy,
and breathing methods, which helps release physical and emotional tensions and
armoring. The Jin Shin Do Foundation has information about trainings and practitioners,
as well as books, charts, videos and audiotapes. Karma
Basic concept common to Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. The doctrine holds that
one's state in this life is the result of physical and mental actions in past
incarnations and that present action can determine one's destiny in future incarnations.
Karma is a natural, impersonal law of moral cause and effect. Kinesiology
The study of muscles and their movement. Applied kinesiology is a system that
uses muscle testing procedures, in conjunction with standard methods of diagnosis,
to gain information about a patient's overall state of health. Practitioners analyze
muscle function, posture, gait and other structural factors in addition to inquiring
about lifestyle factors that may be contributing to a health-related problem.
Lactation Educator
Lactation Educators provide personal and community education on the basics of
breastfeeding as well as the mutual benefits to mother and baby. Life
Coaching Life Coaching has been developed since the late 80s from a number
of different complementary sources, the contributions of all of them being adapted
and synthesised by professional coaches. These sources include Coach University
and the work of Thomas Leonard, NLP and the work of Anthony Robbins and others,
and the "Inner Game" approach to sports developed by Timothy Galway. Light
Box a set of bright, full-spectrum light bulbs inside a box with a reflective
background and diffusing screen; produces light that's 10 to 20 times stronger
than ordinary indoor light. Used to treat winter depression, or SAD (seasonal
affective disorder). Treatment typically involves spending 15 minutes to 3 hours
in front of a light box every day in the fall, winter, and early spring. Research
suggests that bright lights help regulate the body's internal clock, which controls
hormone secretion and sleep patterns. Lymphatic
drainage The lymphatic system is a vital part of the immune system in
the body. Lymphatic drainage massage assists the operation of the lymphatic system.
The system was devised in the 1930's by a Danish massage therapist, Dr. Emil Vodder,
and is popular and well established as a health modality in Germany and Austria. Magnetic
Therapy magnetic field therapy or bio-magnetic therapy
involves the use of magnets, magnetic devices or magnetic fields to treat a variety
of physical and emotional conditions, including circulatory problems, certain
forms of arthritis, chronic pain, sleep disorders, and stress. Manipulation
application of manual force for healing. Term describes the techniques used in
osteopathy, chiropractic, massage, and other bodywork therapies. Manipulation
may involve various forms of massage, muscle pressure, and joint realignment or
adjustment. Mantra
in Hinduism and Buddhism, mystic word used in ritual and meditation. It is believed
to have power to bring into being the reality it represents. Use of such mantras
usually requires initiation by a guru, or spiritual teacher. Macerate
To chop, grind, break or crush into smaller pieces.
Massage
Therapy The systematic therapeutic stroking or kneading of part or all
of the body. Soft tissues of the body are manipulated to reduce tension and stress,
increase circulation, aid the healing of muscle and other soft-tissue injuries,
control pain, and promote overall well-being. A variety of strokes are used, such
as rhythmic tapping, kneading and rolling motions on the muscle tissues. Massage
allows the body to release endorphins, its own natural pain relievers. This provides
a perfect antidote to stress, stimulating the body's immune system and acting
as a preventative benefit having a profound effect on both the body and the mind.
Medicine, Holistic/Wholistic
Wholistic medicine is a broadly descriptive term for a healing philosophy that
views a patient as a whole person, not as just a disease or a collection of symptoms.
In the course of treatment, wholistic medical practitioners may address emotional
and spiritual dimensions as well as the nutritional, environmental and lifestyle
factors that may contribute to an illness. Many wholistic practitioners combine
conventional forms of treatment with natural or alternative treatments. Return
To Top Meditation
The practice of sitting or resting quietly and performing mental exercises designed
to relax the body and focus the mind on a single point of reference. People have
meditated since ancient times as part of all religions. Meditation is now used
by many without any religious associations as a method of stress reduction; known
to lower levels of cortisol, a hormone released in response to stress. Meditation
enhances recuperation and improves the body's resistance to disease. Regular practice
of meditation leads to greater powers of concentration and a sense of having some
control and efficiency in one's life. Meditation can help with pain relief, lower
blood pressure and even help with circulation problems. Meridians
In Chinese theory, these are the energy pathways which run through the body carrying
the vital force or energy called chi. Midwifery
Midwives provide education and support during pregnancy, assist the mother during
labor and delivery and provide follow-up care. Practitioners of childbirth support
include childbirth educators, childbirth assistants and women labor coaches who
also provide post-partum home care.is holistic woman-to-woman care for well woman
gyn care, conception, pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care. Midwives believe
birth is a natural process and a rite of passage. Care is given in the hospital,
a birth center, or the woman's home. Moxibustion
A technique using various applications of heat by burning the herb Artemesia
vulgaris to stimulate acupoints. Burning moxa gives off mild and constant heat
which effectively penetrates the tissues. It has a pungent smell. Myofascial
Release When we experience physical trauma or inflammation, however, the
fascia loses its pliability. In the normal healthy state, the fascia is relaxed
and wavy in configuration. It has the ability to stretch and move without restriction.
It becomes tight, restricted and a source of tension to the rest of the body.
Therapy sessions are hands-on treatments during which therapists use a multitude
of Myofascial Release techniques and movement therapy. N.A.E.T.
Nambudripad's Allergy Elimination Technique
is an approach to detecting and eliminating allergies. N.A.E.T. combines Kinesiology
and Oriental Medicine to clear allergic reactions. The technique used involves
stimulation of specific acupuncture points along the spinal column which are associated
with the individual organs of the body. A surrogate may be used when testing animals. Network
Spinal Analysis Network Spinal Analysis is an approach
to wellness that applies low force touch contacts, applied at Spinal Gateways,
to cue the nervous system to develop new strategies for living and healing. Two
spinal "healing" waves develop which help improve spinal and neural
integrity, adaptability, and significantly advance wellness and quality of life. NLP
Counseling A NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) practitioner will teach
a client to relate to the world in a series of six levels: the environment; behaviour;
capability; belief; identity and spirituality. Clients are guided by the practitioner
in a series of brief sessions designed to discover how you have learnt to think
and feel; with 'reprogramming' clients are taught to take control of their actions. NOSODE
a homeopathic remedy made from diseased tissue or bodily secretions rather than
from a plant or animal. Taken like a homeopathic immunization to build up an immune
response against a specific disease. Nosodes are often named for the disease present
in the material they were made from - for example, the flu nosode and the infectious
mononucleosis nosode. Numerology
Numerology is the study of the ancient mystic science of Numbers and their deep
esoteric meanings in relation to the universe in general, and to our lives, in
particular. Before there was the alphabet, there was Number, which explains in
a cosmic sense all the principles of the Divine. Everything comes from our first
form of communication and Numerologists can chart out our Divine purpose in life,
as well as the challenges and tests we will undergo to achieve it. The ancient
philosopher Pythagoras was the first mystic teacher to put the study of Divine
Vibrations into a form that could be utilized by those questing for spiritual
fulfillment in the Mystic schools (which was kept hidden from the masses). Using
the full name at birth and the complete birthdate, a Numerologist can tune a seeker
to his or her higher spiritual mission. Nutrition
Consultation with a nutritional therapist will involve an in-depth look at your
lifestyle, diet and habits, and your skin will be examined for clues. In some
cases, samples of sweat, hair and urine will be taken as these can provide a valuable
'read out' of your body's state. Some practitioners use Vega testing or applied
kinesiology to allow your body to 'speak' of its intolerances. Organic
A product that is certified organic, is one that has been grown without
the use of chemical/pesticides on soil that has been chemical free for a certain
number of years. It also meets certain other requirements put forth by the certifying
agency. Certified organic products can be expensive due to the costly certification
process. It is possible for a product to be organic and not carry the certificate
and is usually much cheaper as a result. The term "organic" on a label
does not necessarily mean that the product is certified organic as the term is
used quite loosely. (For more on the subject of organic

News)
Orthomolecular
Medicine a form of nutrient therapy that uses combinations of vitamins,
minerals, and amino acids normally found in the body to maintain good health and
to treat specific conditions, such as asthma, heart disease, depression, and schizophrenia.
"Orthomolecular" means an approach based on a correct (ortho) balance
of substances present in the body. Oxidation
A chemical reaction in which oxygen combines with another substance. When
fats and oils oxidize, they become rancid. Photosensitizer
Ant substance that increases the skin's sensitivity to the sun promoting
sunburn.

To Top Pet Therapy
a therapeutic approach based on the idea that expressing
affection for a pet helps people feel happier, maintain a positive outlook, and
therefore improve their health. According to several studies, having a pet can
reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and ward off loneliness and depression. Many
nursing homes and some prisons have developed pet therapy programs, with excellent
results. Polarity
Developed by the Osteopath and Chiropractor Dr. Randolph Stone, Polarity Therapy
works primarily with the energy fields that underlie the human body. It is based
on the energy model that was developed in India three thousand years ago and which
is combined with the Western understanding of the structure and function of the
body. The resulting combination becomes a very potent therapy which has a wide
application to health at the mental, emotional and physical level. Prana
the yogic concept of a cosmic energy or life force, similar to the Chinese idea
of chi, that enters the body with the breath. Prana is thought to flow through
the body, bringing health and vitality. It is considered the vital link between
the spiritual self and the material self.
Pranayama a term from yoga and Ayurveda meaning breath control.
Psychotherapy The
fundamental task of the psychotherapeutic relationship is to create an interpersonal
environment in which we can discover, become and deal more creatively with who
we are, so that we might engage more realistically and with deeper fulfillment
in the world. The therapist is there to offer empathic involvement in our unfolding,
without judgment or blame, but with curiosity, compassion and respect for our
distinct being and unknown destiny. Rebirthing
Rebirthing is a technique of conscious breathing that can help in releasing physical,
emotional or mental blockages, also known as conscious-connected breathing or
vivation. It is best learned by participating as a client in rebirthing sessions
with a certified rebirther. Several books are available that describe the process.
The leading author on rebirthing is Sondra Ray. Reflexology
A system of therapy which involves manipulation of specific areas of
the feet, hands and ears. Different regions of the are believed to correspond
to all the glands, organs, and parts of the body. It is believed that stimulation
of these areas can eliminate energy blockage which produces disease in the associated
organs. Applying reflexology
techniques to either the feet, the hands or the ears reduces stress and tension
and profoundly relaxes all the corresponding glands, organs and parts of the body.
This facilitates improved circulation of the blood and lymph, and improves nerve
function. Consequently, all the cells of the body are cleansed, revitalized and
rejuvenated and the body is more able to utilize its innate healing capacity.
Reflexology supports the person's body in its own natural healing processes. Regression
psychological defense mechanism, viewed as a return to an earlier mode of behavior,
thought, or feeling. The unconscious process that helps the mind resolve conflicts
or lessen anxiety by returning to forms of gratification previously abandoned.
Reiki Reiki
is a non-invasive, non-manipulative, laying-on-of-hands in which the practitioner
opens themselves to this healing energy and transmits it to the body of the client.
Reiki is about unconditional love, healing, and acceptance. It is a gentle, powerful
energy that accelerates the bodies natural healing abilities and is complementary
to conventional and holistic wellness services. Reiki is
a form of spiritual healing developed by Mikao Usui in the early 20th century.
Reiki has been shwon to have a healing impact on the mental, emotional and physical
being . Rolfing
Ida Rolf was the first to create, practice and teach a system of bodywork aimed
toward working with the connective tissue of the body to achieve structural changes
in the client. She originally called her system Structural Integration, but it
came to be called Rolfing. Rosen
Method Bodywork Developed by Marion Rosen, this work emphasizes simplicity.
The practitioner contacts contracted muscles and matches the muscle tension. The
practitioner follows changes in the client's breathing as a means of guiding the
client's inner process. The work can bring up buried feelings and memories, and
can be a tool for pain relief and personal growth. Rubenfeld
Synergy This method integrates elements of Alexander, Feldenkrais, gestalt
and hypnotherapy into a body-mind therapy that helps clients contact and release
energy blocks, tensions and imbalances. Rather than treating illnesses, the practitioner
treats the psychophysical problems people carry with them. By dealing with the
emotional body, the practitioner can often abate physical symptoms. Return
To Top Self-Actualization
Fully realizing one's individual human potential. Self-Awareness
Self-conscious state of focusing attention on oneself. Sensitizer
When after repeated use a substance causes severe allergic reactions it is
called a sensitizer.
Shaman
among tribal peoples, a magician, medium, or healer who owes his powers to mystical
communion with the spirit world. Characteristically, a shaman goes into auto-hypnotic
trances, during which he contacts spirits. Shamans are found among the Siberians,
Eskimos, Native American tribes, in S.E. Asia, and in Oceania. There is also now
a development of shamanic healers and practitioners in North America. (See Spiritual/Shamanic
Healing.) Shamanic Healing
A shaman is a person with the ability to access experiences, open consciousness,
and extend beyond normally-perceived reality, to connect with other realms of
consciousness. The shaman directs his or her intent (the basis of any transformation)
to manifest change, empowerment and healing: physical, psychological, or emotional.
The concept of shamanic consciousness consistently uses connections with the Earth,
spirit animals, guides etc. Shamballa
Healing This modality is brought to us from Ascended Master Germain, via
Haridas Melchizedek (John Armitage). Shamballa is about initiating people into
the ressonance of the Diamond Light of Shamballa, the other-dimensional residence
of the Ascended Masters. Germain says he is the originator of an Atlantean 22
symbol system originally created to raise people's vibrations. Shiatsu
a form of acupressure, used in Japan for over 1,000 years to treat pain and illness
and for general health maintenance. Using their fingers, elbows, knees and feet,
the shiatsu practitioner works on the body's acupoints to stimulate and harmonise
the body's life energy (chi). Very much a health-promoting therapy, shiatsu is
very effective for many conditions including stress, digestive disorders, headaches,
sluggish circulation, asthma, and rheumatic conditions. Somatics
Also called Somatics Psychology or Somatic Therapy, "somatic" literally
means "of or pertaining to the body." In the context of Somatics Psychology,
it refers to the mind-body connection and makes use of techniques to bring awareness
of the mind and the body to each other. Somato
Respiratory Integration A system of reconnecting between our brain and
body through its natural wisdom, through various exercises which ask for you to
touch your body, and gently breathe. Each exercise seeks to activate a different
state of consciousness, from helping us to connect to our suffering through states
of sheer ecstasy. It teaches us that we heal ourselves and gives us physical exercises
to be more whole and shift our bodies, minds and our life. Sounding
the Body a diagnostic and therapeutic technique used in sound healing.
Sound healers read a patient's body by singing a series of tones and listening
for imbalances in the natural frequencies of the body or its' energy fields. Imbalances
are said to be indicated by changes in the tone of the healer's voice. To correct
a problem, the sound healer applies sound to the patient's body by singing certain
tones near the affected organ, or by applying tuning forks or electronic vibratory
instruments to the body. Spiritual/Shamanistic
Healing Spiritual Healing is very much a holistic modality with the implicit
belief that health is not just being free of symptoms of disease, but of the spiritual,
emotional, mental and physical harmony of the whole person. The understanding
is that the Healer acts as a channel for Healing Energies - helping the person
to kick-start their own self-Healing powers thus enabling their own higher self
to deal in the best possible manner with illness or injury. The Healer may call
upon spiritual helpers such as power animals, angels, inner teachers, the client's
Higher Self, or other spiritual forces. Sports
Massage Sports massage is an adaptation of Swedish massage. Its purpose
is to prepare athletes for sporting activity and help them recover from the exertion
of sporting activity. Sports massage trainings vary widely in length, and there
is no standard training length, although the American Massage Therapy Association
and the United States Sports Massage Federation both have standards for approving
trainings. Stress Management
Consultants may work with organisations to audit workplace stress,
identify contributory factors and make recommendations for preventive / ameliorative
action. Some consultants offer training to targeted groups or individuals, helping
them recognise and rethink their own individual responses. Structural
Exam/Diagnosis an osteopathic diagnostic technique - involves a visual,
hands-on assessment by an osteopathic physician of the skeleton, joints, muscles,
ligaments, and tendons. Subluxation
in chiropractic, a misalignment of bones within joints said to interfere with
the flow of nervous impulses and diminish the body's ability to stay healthy. Synergy
When a combination of essential oils has a therapeutic effect greater
than the sum of effects of each individual oil.
T'ai
chi A martial art involving meditation and slow, flowing
self-guided movements that follow set forms. This is intended to bring about physical
self-awareness and affect the flow of chi. Almost balletic in its execution, t'ai
chi is more than exercise for the body; it is considered by many to be excellent
at promoting mental clarity and spirituality. There are five styles of t'ai chi;
Chen, Wu, Woo, Sun and Yang. Yang is the flowing, rhythmic version most common
in the West. There are also two forms: short form, consists of 24 movements which
can be performed in ten minutes; the long form has 108 movements which takes up
to 40 minutes to complete. Therapeutic
Touch (TT) A method of healing which does not involve actual physical
contact. The practictioner aligns and balances the patient's natural energy fields
by moving his/her hands above the patient's body. The healer consciously attempts
to focus energy to the reciever to balance and unblock energy flows. Therapeutic
Touch is a means of attuning to and directing the universal life energy. The goal
is to release congestion and balance areas where the flow of life energy has become
disordered. Removal of these blockages facilitates the person's intrinsic healing
powers. TT is most commonly used by nurses. However, many massage therapists incorporate
it into their work. Return
To Top Trager
Dr. Milton Trager, M.D., had a gift for bodywork from a young age, and developed
his own system of bodywork which emphasizes gentle rocking of the client, and
rolling body parts to encourage release and loosening and softening. Some massage
schools offer brief introductory trainings in Trager bodywork, giving the massage
therapist a glimpse into the system. Massage therapists with introductory training
often integrate a bit of the Trager awareness into their massage work. However,
Trager practitioners practice only Trager, at least during a Trager session. TENS
(Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) - delivery of an electric
current through the skin to the nerves. Used in physical therapy and to relieve
painful conditions such as neuralgia, sciatica, and arthritis. The low voltage
electric current blocks the nerves reception of pain signals and possibly stimulates
the production of endorphins, the body's pain-killing chemicals. Therapeutic
Touch practiced by registered nurses and others to relieve pain &
stress. Practitioner assesses where a person's energy field is weak and congested,
then uses his or her hands to direct energy into the field to balance it. Therapy
treatment and care of someone to combat disease, injury, or mental disorder. Tincture
An alcoholic extraction with
the solvent left in as a diluent. Herbs are commonly used in tincture form.
Tonic
herbal remedy made from herbs taken to maintain health or ward off illness, rather
than to treat an illness. Also known as a normalizer. Toning
in sound healing, projection of a nonverbal sound to balance the body's energy
fields. Trigger
Point Therapies Also called MyotherapySM or neuromuscular therapy, this
refers to any of several systems of working with trigger points. Trigger points
are tender congested spots in muscle tissue, which may radiate pain to other areas.
Significant relief results when the trigger point is treated. The techniques used
in trigger point therapies are similar to those used in Shiatsu or acupressure,
but trigger point therapies are based on western anatomy and physiology. Several
institutions have refined the art of trigger point therapy into a self-contained
modality, and teach their therapy in a non-massage context. Vegetable
butters are fats that are solid at room temperature. They are obtained
by blending different natural fractions of a vegetable oil.
Vibrational
Healing A broad range of therapies depending on the
style and techniques of the therapist. Using vibrational essences, sound/frequency,
voice and energetic touch to clear the chakras and raise the vibration of the
human energy field. Healers work on the subtle energy layers of the auric field
to affect change on the physical body. Waterbirthing
Waterbirthing refers to the process by which babies are born directly into water,
when the mother is in a tub, pool or natural body of water and the baby emerges
into the water before having contact with the air. For more information, see http://www.waterbirthinfo.com Watsu
Watsu (from "water" and "shiatsu") began when Harold Dull
started floating people, applying the moves and stretches of the zen shiatsu he
had studied in Japan. Physical and emotional blocks are removed by the work, which
can be done even by small individuals since the client's body in water is buoyant.
It is done in chest-high, 94-degree water. Wildcrafted
The term "wildcrafted" refers to botanicals that grow in the
wild and therefore are not subjected to any agricultural chemicals/pesticides,
but may have been exposed to these substances due to chemical movement by wind
and water.
Yin and Yang
Concepts used in traditional Chinese medicine to understand the dynamic nature
of all the interrelationships in life. Yin and Yang are two aspects of a cyclical
motion which represent the dual opposite and interdependent aspects of everything
in the universe. Everything is paired with its opposite and is represented as
Yin (night, darkness, rest, moon, dimmness, cold, weakness) or Yang (day, light,
activity, sun, brightness, heat, strength). Disease is thought to occur when there
is imbalance in the rhythmic cycling between Yin and Yang. Yoga
A type of therapyfocusing on the
mind/body relationship through physical movement and meditative practice to improve
physical and emotional conditions. Instruction consists of meditation and breathing
exercises and a series of stretches and postures to calm the mind, relax the body,
and ease the spirit. Yoga
Therapy emerging field of practices that use yoga to address mental and
physical problems while integrating body & mind. Practitioners work one-on-one
or in a group setting. Zero
Balancing Zero Balancing is a hands-on bodywork system
designed to align your energy body with your physical structure. Simple yet powerful,
it focuses on the whole person. Considered at the leading edge of body/mind therapies,
ZB moves beyone Western scientific approaches to body structure by incorporating
Eastern concepts of energy and healing. Zone
Therapy another name for reflexology. (See reflexology.) Return
