Global
Ecovillage Network (GEN):What is an
Ecovillage?
Ecovillages are urban or rural communities
of people who strive to integrate a
supportive social environment with a
low-impact way of life. To achieve this,
they integrate various aspects of ecological
design, permaculture, ecological building,
green production, alternative energy,
community building practices, and much
more.
Ecovillages are living models of sustainability.
They represent an effective, accessible
way to combat the degradation of our
social, ecological, and spiritual environments.
Jonathan Dawson's Five Principles of
Ecovillages:
1. Ecovillages are private citizens'
initiatives. They're grassroots.
2. Ecovillagers value community living.
3. They are not overly dependent on
government, corporate, or other centralized
sources for water, food, shelter, power,
and other basic necessities.
4. Ecovillagers have a strong sense
of shared values, often characterized
in spiritual terms.
5. They often serve as research and
demonstration sites. Many offer educational
experiences for others.

for Sustainability, by Jonathan Dawson

Community
Sustainability Assesment
Introduction
With the aim of creating and presenting
to the world outstanding examples of what
it means in live in harmony with nature
in a sustainable way, GEN promotes and
facilitates communities--whether rural
or urban--which develop and implement
technologies and practices such that human
activities are harmlessly integrated into
the natural world in a way that is supportive
of healthy human development and can be
successfully continued into the indefinite
future.
The Global Ecovillage Network is developing
the concept of sustainability auditing
to provide measuring rods for individuals
and for existing villages and communities
to compare their current status with ideal
goals for ecological, social, and spiritual
sustainability. In addition, these tools
are learning instruments - pointing out
actions aspiring individuals and communities
can take to become more sustainable.

The
15 Elements of Ecovillage Living according
to Hildur Jackson and Karen Svensson,
Editors of "Ecovillage Living:
Restoring the Earth and Her People",
Ecovillages provide us with "a
glimpse of the enormous potential
for positive change that is available
to us and can lead us into a more harmonious
and satisfying future"
"Ecovillages
are basically a matter of living on
the Earth with respect for all beings
and natural systems. They embody a mindful
lifestyle, which can be continued indefinitely
in the future."
For
the purpose of their publication, divided
the subject into 15 basic elements of
ecovillage living. These fifteen elements
constitute a broad definition of sustainability,
including social and cultural/spiritual
dimensions. Each of the three dimensions
contains five elements; together they
comprise the ecovillage sustainability
circle.
